Every day, thousands of people fall victim to fraudulent emails, texts and calls from scammers pretending to be their bank. And in this time of expanded use of online and mobile banking, the problem is only growing worse. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission’s report on fraud estimates that American consumers lost a staggering $10 billion to phishing scams and other fraud in 2023—an increase of 13.6% over 2022.

But, scams aren’t so scary when you know what to look for, and Minnwest Bank is committed to helping you spot them as an extra layer of protection for your account.

As a reminder, Minnwest Bank will never call, text or email you to request confidential account information, including:

  • Social security number
  • Debit card PIN
  • Debit or credit card number or three-digit code
  • Account number
  • Online banking username
  • Online banking password

Scammers are always coming up with new ways to trick people, but there are some red flags that you should be able to recognize:

  • You're contacted unexpectedly
  • You're pressured to act quickly
  • You're asked to pay in an unusual way
  • You're asked  to provide personal or bank account information
